Happy Diving!
Story Text:

Ugh -- ""Hey mom!""  Leaf just tore in with Aunty Emily, dripping garbage juice on our reclaimed bamboo floors and smelling ripe. ""We found these behind the grocery store. “   My daughter has that mess = happy grin on her face.  She loves the adventure of dumpster diving with Aunty Emily for the food co-op.  There's a twitch in that grin today - she must have found something exciting in those bins.   I understand, I used to love the adventure of it too when I was younger – finding hidden treasure others had thrown away, mostly furniture and household goods. It was fun and subversive.  I always swore I’d never dive for food though. How times have changed.  She hefts her ratty but clean red pack off her back and starts pulling out the ""groceries"": more than slightly wilted lettuce, all seeing potatoes, apples that lost the fight and ooh, cookies! It’s not the cookies she’s excited about though – Emily’s been hiding in the corner – unusual for my ADDled best friend, and she’s twirling her bright pink hair in her index finger, a sure sign she’s nervous. What are these two up to? She steps forward to take her won pack off and- The cat is out of the bag. Literally. Kittens to be exact, two of them. They jump out of the sack and skitter across the floor. One stops abruptly to lick garbage juice off its fur. The other chases a smaller potato across the floor, stumbling over it. “ You know that Dad wouldn’t- “ I start but she cuts me off with a big hug to my middle  “ Mom, he’s always talking about that “Damn garbage cat” with such affection. I think he misses him.” Emily and I burst out laughing and I know we’ll be keeping the cats .
